THE PREDICTION

Always the most anticipated showdown not just in the Asia Cup, but any tournament across the world of cricket is when India and Pakistan face off. The biggest of rivals on and off the pitch, matches between these two subcontinental titans rarely fail to deliver and another classic is expected here in Pallekele. Pakistan laid down a marker leading into this match by demolishing Nepal by 238 runs on home soil. India meanwhile, are playing their first game of the 2023 Asia Cup and whether this will have an adverse effect on their performance levels remains to be seen.

Pakistan’s form in 50-over cricket for a long time now has been excellent, winning eight of their last nine ODIs with the format suiting the skills of their batters perfectly. Combined that with a well-balanced bowling attack full of express pace and it makes them a huge challenge for India. We seldom see India play their very best 50-over XI in bilateral cricket due to factors such as injuries and players being rested. With that in mind, whilst they are clearly a formidable team when at their strongest, it’s hard to see them hitting the ground running straight away as a collective unit, which they’ll need to if they want to come out on top here. Ultimately, the tried and tested Pakistan formula in this format of the game along with their squad being on top form and full of confidence, makes Babar Azam’s side worth backing to get the better of India on this occasion.
