Cody Stamann: Vet needs win after losing five of last seven bouts
34-year-old Cody Stamann (21-7-1) has lost his last two fights, and five of his last seven, so he comes into UFC Fight Night 247 desperately needing a win. He has fought some high calibre opponents during this tough run including Merab Dvalishvili and Said Nurmagomedov, and ultimately he has been found wanting as the quality has stepped up. He will be eager to get back on track but that will not be straight forward against Blackshear.
Da’Mon Blackshear: Da Monster coming off 18-second knockout loss
Da’Mon Blackshear (14-7-1) had some good momentum after two successive wins in 2023 but he has since lost his last two and had lost his way a little. He comes off an 18-second knockout by Montel Jackson in July and it will be interesting to see how he responds following the first knockout loss of his career.
Cody Stamann vs Da’Mon Blackshear Prediction
These fights between fighters on losing skids are never easy to call as so much depends on their training camps and the psychological part of the sport. Blackshear especially has to come back from a knockout loss – the first of his career – and how he handles that will be key to his chances of success.
In this instance, we are less concerned about that loss compared to Stamann’s gradual decline. He has been found out a little at the higher levels and he has lost five of his last seven now.
That is not an easy skid to reverse and while he has only been stopped once during that time via submission, we do not like the negative dynamic around him. Reversing that will not be easy for Stamann.
Desperation should be evident among both men and it could well come down to which man wins the grappling and gets Octagon control for long enough. We just edge Blackshear to have the edge in quality but Stamann’s wrestling is strong.
We would avoid picking a winner here and back this one to go to the scorecards. Desperate times lead to desperate measures and we can see both fighters being a little cautious and this going to the judges.
Prediction: Fight to go the distance
