Club Brugge were extremely close to missing out on the top 24 of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League but squeezed in ahead of facing Serie A title challengers Atalanta this week.

Club Brugge Preview: An impressive side

Club Brugge, under the management of Nicky Hayen, come into this one on the back of a 1-0 win over Oud-Heverlee Leuven at the Janbreydelstadion at the weekend thanks to a first-half strike scored by Gustaf Nilsson.

They took the lead at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City last month but eventually suffered a 3-1 loss. They managed to squeeze themselves through, though, after what was an impressive campaign that involved a win against Aston Villa in the autumn.

Atalanta Preview: Fun and fluent

Atalanta have endured a difficult month and a half or so across all competitions but Internazionale’s defeat to Fiorentina last week and Napoli’s draw with Udinese means they remain in contention to win their first ever Scudetto.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Bergamasci returned to form at the weekend with an impressive 5-0 demolition of Hellas Verona at the Bentegodi thanks to four goals from Italy international Mateo Retegui as well as a strike from Ederson.

Club Brugge Team News: Fully fit

The home team have no reported fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for this weekend ahead of the visit of Atalanta. That means they will be able to name their strongest possible eleven with an importance on Raphael Onyedika and Ferran Jutgla.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Mignolet; Seys, Ordonez, Mechele, De Cuyper; Onyedika, Jashari; Talbi, Vanaken, Tzolis; Jutgla

Atalanta Team News: Attacking injuries

As well as first-choice goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi remaining a doubt for Atalanta this weekend, they have key absentees in attack as winter signing Daniel Maldini is sidelined alongside Gianluca Scamacca, whilst Ademola Lookman is also still a doubt.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Djimsiti, Hien, Toloi; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; De Ketelaere, Samardzic; Retegui

Unavailable: Scalvini (Injured), Kossounou (Injured), Kolasinac (Injured), Maldini (Injured), Scamacca (Injured)

Questionable: Carnesecchi (Injured), Lookman (Injured)

Club Brugge vs Atalanta Prediction

Despite their plethora of injuries, Atalanta have been able to put together an impressive and deep squad. Club Brugge have been strong at home in this competition with that aforementioned victory against Villa as well as draws against Sporting CP and Juventus. Atalanta will be without their full strength eleven so that may limit their fluency and given the hosts’ ability to shut down their opposition, a rare low-scoring game involving Atalanta may well be on the cards in this one.

Club Brugge vs Atalanta Tip: Under 3.5 goals
