Chris Weidman: New Yorker looking for back-to-back wins for first time since 2015

Chris Weidman (16-7) returns to action for the second time in 2024 as he looked to follow up his victory of a Bruno Silva back in March. That win was originally ruled a TKO win for Weidman but was subsequently changed by the Athletic Commission to a technical decision due to Silva suffering and eye poke leading to the stoppage. A welcome victory nonetheless for Weidman who had lost his previous two fights. After going 13-0, Weidman has since gone 3-7 and suffered a whole host of injuries during that time. At the age of 40, it is uncertain how long Weidman has left in the sport, but he will be fired up to make it back-to-back wins in the Octagon for the first time since 2015 against Anders.

Eryk Anders: 37-year-old eager to follow up Pickett win

Like his opponent, Eryk Anders (16-8 with one no contest) is coming off unanimous decision win over Jamie Pickett, and this would be the first time since 2019 that he registers successive wins in the UFC. After starting his career 11-1, he has since gone 5-7 with one no contest so there are many similarities to Weidman's career in recent years. It has to be said that Anders’ record does not possess the same calibre of names that Weidman's does. That said, he is three years younger than Weidman and has not suffered the horrific injuries that his opponent has. Those are unquestionably key factors in Anders’ favour coming into this fight.

Chris Weidman vs Eryk Anders Prediction

This fight in the UFC's middleweight division is one of the more anticipated bouts on the card. While Weidman and Anders are in the twilight of their careers, they still have plenty to offer and this is a really good fight that the UFC matchmakers have made.

This fifth was supposed to take place at UFC 309 in Weidman’s native New York on the Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic blockbuster PPV but was called off last minute due to Anders suffering from food poisoning. That was something of a blow to Weidman as he was desperate to fight in front of his home crowd and it could see him a little less fired up for this bout now in Las Vegas.

We have questioned for quite some time how much Weidman have left in the tank but then he pulled off the win against Bruno Silva in March. He certainly talks with great inner belief but whether he can back that up remains to be seen.

Anders is the younger man and has not suffered the same kind of horrific injuries that Weidman has. He should in theory have more gas left in the tank but we will find out on Saturday night.

We had a marginal preference for Anders a few weeks ago when this fight was slated to take place in Weidman’s back yard. On neutral territory, we favour Anders even more so now. The New Yorker has enjoyed an outstanding career but we struggle to see him getting a win here.

Prediction: Eryk Anders to win
