The prediction
As they have done many times in recent history, the Geelong Cats and Hawthorn Hawks played out an instant classic on Easter Monday. The Cats got the job done by just seven points after holding a comfortable lead for the majority of the match. Patrick Dangerfield continued his renaissance as a full forward, kicking three goals.
Carlton went some way towards righting the 2025 season ship by thrashing the North Melbourne Kangaroos 153-71. Second-half fade outs were a distant memory as they put the Kangaroos to the sword in the second half and ran away with their biggest margin of the season.
Questions remain on the bonafide’s of the Carlton side’s finals aspirations and the Cats present the biggest test thus far. The strength and depth of their midfield remains undisputed with Patrick Cripps, George Hewett and Sam Walsh standing in the way of the Cats.
Recent history doesn’t paint a clear picture; the sides have won three each since 2020, including a split last year. Carlton produced maybe their best performance of 2024 in a ten-goal victory in Round 15 last year and will need something similar to get one over the Cats this time around.
The Blues sit 13th on the ladder coming into this week and their healthy percentage shows they are significantly better than their position indicates. They have their chance this week and we think they can stay in this one for a long way. Questions still remain about their ability to close out matches and that steers us towards the Cats in a close battle.
