The Prediction

Brisbane began their title defence with a gritty four-point victory over Sydney in a rematch of the Grand Final. Despite facing injury concerns and off-field distractions during the pre-season, the Lions showcased their depth and resilience. Their midfield, led by the likes of Hugh McCluggage and Will Ashcroft, will be keen to dominate the contest once again. However, the Lions will need to be wary of complacency. Lachie Neale, their Brownlow Medallist, was uncharacteristically quiet last week with just ten disposals.

West Coast, under new coach Andrew McQualter, endured a nightmare start to their campaign, suffering a heavy defeat to Gold Coast. The Eagles' performance raised serious concerns about their competitiveness. All eyes will be on young gun Harley Reid, who struggled to make an impact in his season debut. The former No. 1 draft pick will be eager to showcase his talents and prove he can perform consistently at the highest level.

For West Coast to have any chance of an upset, they'll need to drastically improve their contested ball winning. The Eagles' experienced recruits must step up and provide leadership in what promises to be a hostile environment at the Gabba.

While West Coast will be desperate to avoid another embarrassing defeat, Brisbane's class should prove too much to overcome. Expect the Lions to flex their premiership muscles and run out comfortable winners.

Tip: Brisbane to win with -38.5 handicap
