Brandon Nakashima makes just his second appearance in the main draw in Madrid with hopes that a solid run will propel him into the top 30 for the first time.

The American arrives on the back of three straight defeats after a surge to the last four in Houston was followed by early exits in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Sebastian Ofner stands in his way of a maiden success in the Spanish capital, with the Austrian full of confidence after posting his best win since returning from a seven-month absence. 

The 28-year-old, playing on a protected ranking, beat Hugo Gaston in straight sets in the first round and it will depend on how he holds up heading into another high-level encounter. 

It may be a too much too soon for Ofner to put together a winning win on tour and Nakashima should get the job done if he stays solid.
