Ben Shelton continued his stuttering clay court campaign as he had to save match points in both set two and three before eventually winning his first-round match against qualifier Borna Gojo. The American won 4-6 7-6 7-6, saving nine of the 10 break point opportunities that he conceded.

Shelton could not break the Gojo serve and must improve if he wants to make a deep run at one of these events in the coming weeks and months. He now takes on Botic van de Zandschulp who got through a three-set match with Roberto Bautista Agut. The lucky loser has not been in the best of form lately but may fancy his prospects against the second seed who is clearly struggling on clay at the moment.

Neither player is particularly comfortable on the surface or playing well at the moment, so there’s a decent chance of both big servers cancelling each other out in a tight match which could go either way.
