Borussia Dortmund Preview: Continuing to confound
Borussia Dortmund’s league season took a huge step back once again in the final couple of weeks before the international break as they suffered two more defeats, further entrenching them in midtable and well clear of the European places. A 0-1 loss at home to Augsburg was followed up by them going down 2-0 away at RB Leipzig.
However, those losses were sandwiched in between a crucial win against Lille in the Champions League, which sent Niko Kovac’s men through to the quarter-finals, where Barcelona await them. That will understandably take priority for Dortmund presently.
Mainz Preview: Picking up where they left off
The big challenge for Mainz not is regaining all the momentum they had prior to this two-week break, which probably came at the wrong time for Bo Henriksen’s side. Going into this round of Bundesliga fixtures, Mainz are sitting in the dizzy heights of third-place and edging ever closer to history with Champions League qualification now a realistic target.
Mainz have racked up 14 points from the last 18 available to them, winning four and drawing two of their last six matches. After twice taking the lead against Freiburg, they failed to see the job through and were pegged back on both occasions.
Borussia Dortmund Team News: Sabitzer out in midfield
Midfielders Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer will both miss this one with knee injuries. After heading back to Dortmund before the end of the international break, Jamie Gittens’ fitness will be assessed.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Anton, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Can, Gross; Adeyemi, Brandt, Gittens; Guirassy
Unavailable: Nmecha (Injured), Sabitzer (Injured)
Questionable: Gittens (Fitness)
Mainz Team News: Suspensions force changes
With central defender Dominik Kohr and left-wing-back Phillipp Mwene both suspended, Henriksen will need to alter his starting XI and potentially bring in the likes of Andreas Hanche Olsen and Silvan Widmer. He’ll also be missing both Bell and Dal through injury.
Predicted XI (3-4-3): Zentner; Da Costa, Jenz, Hanche-Olsen; Widmer, Sano, Amiri, Caci; Nebel, Burkardt, Lee
Unavailable: Bell (Injured), Dal (Injured), Kohr (Suspended), Mwene (Suspended)
Questionable:
Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz Prediction
What an opportunity this is for Mainz. Borussia Dortmund have been so unreliable in the Bundesliga this season, whilst Mainz are enjoying a season of dreams. The question is whether Mainz can fly out of the blocks quickly immediately following the international break. They certainly won’t be afraid to take the game to their opponents here.
Borussia Dortmund have goals in their game, but keeping clean sheets has been an issue for them throughout the campaign. With that in mind, backing both teams to score may well prove to be the shrewd move here.
