Ben Shelton vs Lorenzo Sonego Prediction

Ben Shelton was in the midst of a battle of attrition with French veteran Gael Monfils before the 38-year-old was forced to retire from the match in the fourth set. That came after three successive tiebreaks which Shelton was leading 2-1 and the American just about had the edge in an intriguing match.

That was another tough test for Shelton that he came through and his confidence will be building with every victory. He has not had an easy run to this stage having played some quality opponents but he has impressed throughout and is looking strong.

He now faces Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego who is now enjoying his best ever performance in a Grand Slam event. He reached the quarters by overcoming American talent Learner Tien in four sets. It was arguably a match too many for Tien as his second serve especially let him down and Sonego took full advantage while dominating on his own serve also.

These two have met twice before and each managed a win. Sonego won on clay in Roland Garros in 2023 while Shelton won on the hard courts of Cincinnati in 2022. Both are different players now however and that is what makes this match so fascinating.

Both players are dominant on their own serve and it could well come down to who can generate the most break points opportunities and take advantage of them in the key moments.

Our leaning is with Shelton given his youth and ability to dig deep and produce at key moments. It would be remiss to write Sonego off given how well he is playing but in a match that could easily go four or even five sets, Shelton just gets our nod.
