Belinda Bencic began her clay court preparations with a surprising loss to Sofia Kenin in Charleston. The Swiss player never got going, making a dreadful start and losing 6-0 6-3 to the American who went on to make the final of the event. It’s still been an encouraging year so far for Bencic, having won the Abu Dhabi Open and made a deep run at Indian Wells, where she reached the quarter-finals.

Zeynep Sonmez got through both her qualifying rounds in straight sets to set up a first-round match with Bencic. The Turkish player’s best performance so far this season was making the quarter-finals of the Merida Open, beating eighth seed Maria Sakkari along the way.

While Bencic has admitted in the past that clay is not her preferred surface, she has shown a good deal of adaptability in recent times. We expect her to get back to winning ways with a comfortable win over Sonmez in the first-round here.
