Beatriz Haddad Maia slumped to a thumping first-round loss in Stuttgart to Emma Navarro, losing 6-3 6-0. The Brazilian is having a dreadful season so far, having not won a match on tour since reaching the third-round of the Australian Open in January. A French Open semi-finalist in 2023, she needs to find an upturn in form fast and must hope that occurs in Madrid. 

Bernarda Pera enters the second-round after a mostly straight forward 6-4 6-3 win over Jana Fett. She’s now won three matches on the spin including qualifying in Madrid and must hold some newly found confidence after early exits in Charleston and Rouen. 

The head-to-head is 1-1, but neither match was on clay and the last encounter was in January 2019, with Haddad Maia winning in straight sets at the Australian Open. Despite her higher ranking, the Brazilian can’t buy a win from anywhere and we lean towards Pera winning in three sets.
