Xabi Alonso has done an excellent job since arriving at Bayer Leverkusen but his side, who are still just about defending champions in Germany with Bayern Munich now running away with regaining the title, have endured a tougher time of it this time around, despite remaining strong.
One of the criticisms of Alonso even last season was a desire, often to the detriment of his side, to heavily rotate his players and that eventually cost them in the UEFA Europa League final against Atalanta – and may well have cost them last week at the Allianz Arena.

In that first-leg in Bavaria, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern earned perhaps their most impressive result of the season as they dispatched of Leverkusen by three goals to nil thanks to a brace from England captain Harry Kane as well as a goal from Germany international Jamal Musiala.
Bayern have some impressive depth throughout their squad and a challenge for silverware on multiple fronts is always the bare minimum expectation for the club but they look as though, with that statement performance, they could eye up a famous season.

At the weekend, both Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich were beaten at home by Werder Bremen and Bochum respectively to mean there were no changes to the German title race in which Bayern are leading comfortably. Leverkusen will not be gung-ho despite their deficit as they are a mature side but, even at their best last season, produced results from nothing based almost purely on emotion. That will concern Bayern and Leverkusen, with home advantage, may well be favourites for the game on the evening – though they have to do a lot go overturn the overall aggregate score.
