THE TEAM NEWS

CHICAGO CUBS

  • The Cubs are riding a three-game losing streak dating back to last Sunday, but that negative run comes on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Chicago have gone 6-4 in their last ten games, however, and remain very much alive in the NL Central title race.
  • Their IL list includes names such as Ben Zobrist, Willson Contreras, Cole Hamels, Brandon Morrow and Xavier Cedeno. Two players to watch in Chicago are Kris Bryant (.299, 3-for-6, 2 RBI in the last game) and Javier Báez (2-for-6 in the last game, .289 in the season).
  • Jon Lester will start for the Cubs here. The veteran left-hander is 3-4 with a 5.09 ERA on the road but owns a 9-6 mark with a 3.87 ERA during the 2019 season. Lester also has a 1.35 WHIP and 105 Ks in 19 starts (107.0 IP).

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

  • The Giants are coming off a walk-off win last time out and have already clinched this three-game series against the Cubs. San Francisco have gone 4-1 in their last five matches and seem to be one of the hottest teams in MLB of late, going 9-1 in their last ten games. San Francisco have won 16 games already in July.
  • Travis Bergen and Evan Longoria remain on the IL, while both Johnny Cueto and Nick Vincent are on the 60-day IL, so they’re not expected back any time soon. Pablo Sandoval might be hitting only .261 this season, but he hit the game-winning home run on Tuesday. Alex Dickerson has had a stellar 2019 year as well thanks to a 1.097 OPS mark.
  • Tyler Beede gets the nod for the Giants in this one. The 26-year-old right-hander has a 3-3 mark in 12 games (ten starts) this season for San Francisco, but also has a 4.70 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP and 55 Ks in 59.1 IP. Less than stellar numbers, but he’s been throwing the ball well of late thanks to a 3.24 ERA in his last seven starts.

THE PREDICTION

The Cubs remain a serious playoff contender in the NL Central, but they have been struggling lately. The same can’t be said about the Giants, as San Francisco have been one of the hottest clubs in MLB over the past month. Considering the momentum, the home-field advantage and their performance over the past few days, it seems the Giants have everything in their favour to complete the sweep against Chicago.
