Auxerre have been steady and impressive throughout the season as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table ahead of taking on Ligue 1’s rock-bottom Montpellier Herault this weekend.

Auxerre Preview: Impressive season

Having gained promotion to the top-flight of French football last season, Auxerre were excellent in the first-half of the campaign and went into the winter break sitting in the top-half of the table and they remain firmly in mid-table and clear of being dragged into a relegation battle.

The home team most recently shared a 1-1 draw with Nice at the Allianz Riviera a couple of weeks ago, scoring an equalising goal deep into second-half stoppage-time. That means they have suffered just one defeat in their last six matches in Ligue 1.

Montpellier Preview: Awful season

It has been a miserable campaign for Montpellier Herault and they have been circling the drain for a while with relegation now beckoning. Boyhood supporter and former Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset replaced Michel Der Zakarian earlier this season but it hasn’t improved.

Gasset remains in charge after the March international break after a bottom-of-the-table clash against Saint-Etienne a couple of weeks ago that was suspended due to protests from Montpellier supporters in a game whereby they were 2-0 down at home late on.

Auxerre Team News: A few injuries

Key man Ivory Coast international midfielder Hamed Junior Traore, on loan from AFC Bournemouth, is a doubt due to a shoulder injury. They also have a few key injuries, too, such as Theo Pellenard and Lasso Coulibaly.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Leon; Diomande, Jubal, Osho; Hoever, Owusu, Danois, Mensah; Perrin, Sinayoko; Bair

Unavailable: Pellenard (Injured), Buayi-Kiala (Injured), Coulibaly (Injured), Zossou (Injured)

Questionable: Traore (Injured)

Montpellier Team News: Defensive issues

Montpellier are dealing with several issues at the back with both Kiki Kouyate and Theo Sainte-Luce missing through suspension. As well as that, both Nikola Maksimovic and Becir Omeragic are unavailable due to injuries.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Lecomte; Mouanga, Kouyate, Sagnan; Sacko, Nzingoula, Chotard, Maamma; Coulibaly, Savanier; Delort

Unavailable: Kouyate (Suspended), Maksimovic (Injured), Omeragic (Injured), Sainte-Luce (Suspended)

Questionable: Jullien (Injured), Tchato (Injured), Gueguin (Injured), Issoufou (Injured)

Auxerre vs Montpellier Prediction

Auxerre have, as mentioned, proven themselves to be competitive in Ligue 1 with their overall aspirations being to avoid relegation. They can now perhaps focus on pulling off a surprising top-half finish. They face a Montpellier side that are in disarray and crisis both on and off the pitch with no suggestions things are going to change after the international break so siding with Auxerre is the way to go for this one.

Auxerre vs Montpellier Tip: Double chance – Auxerre to win or draw
