Right now, Australia have it all thanks to their two wins so far, despite not playing anywhere near the levels they are capable of, especially with the bat. At some point, they will click into gear and it really could start to get ugly for England, who threw away a golden opportunity last time out.
The tourists now need to win three of the remaining four white ball games to give themselves a chance of regaining the Ashes with victory in the one-off Test. But over the course of a 50-over contest, England’s batters just lack that ruthless edge and the ability to clutch up. They are too reliant on the likes of Nat Sciver-Brunt and it’s likely to continue costing them.
