Augsburg Preview: Underperforming Augsburg

Jess Thorup remains in charge of an Augsburg side that have underperformed so far this season as they head into the Bundesliga restart sitting in the bottom-half of the table. They would have been desperate for their mini pre-season over the German winter break.

They went into Christmas on the back of a humiliating 5-1 annihilation at the hands of relegation-bound Holstein Kiel a few weeks ago. That loss means they have won just one game inside 90 minutes in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Stuttgart Preview: Mid-table Stuttgart

Stuttgart, under the management of Sebastian Hoeness, propelled themselves from a relegation playoff place in 2023 to finishing as runners’ up in 2024 but they have regressed a bit this season, naturally, as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table.

The visitors went into the winter break on the back of a slender but surprising 1-0 defeat at home to St Pauli due to a 21st minute winner from Johannes Eggestein. That ended an impressive run of form in which they were unbeaten in their previous five matches.

Augsburg Team News: A few issues

Augsburg are dealing with a few issues ahead of the visit of Stuttgart this weekend. For example, both Mads Pedersen and Yusuf Kabadayi remain unavailable for this one, whilst the likes of Keven Schlotterbeck and Frederik Jensen are doubts.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Labrovic; Matsima, Bauer, Schlotterbeck; Wolf, Jakic, Rexhbecaj, Giannoulis; Claude-Maurice; Essende, Tietz

Unavailable: Oxford (Illness), Pedersen (Injured), Kabadayi (Injured)

Questionable: Schlotterbeck (Injured), Jensen (Injured), Okugawa (Injured)

Stuttgart Team News: No Toure

Summer signing El Bilal Toure, who could leave this month according to reports, is an injury absentee alongside Dan-Axel Zagadou this month. Other key men, such as Deniz Undav and Atakan Karazor are also injury doubts.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Neubel; Rouault, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Vagnoman, Keitel, Stiller, Fuhrich; Millot, Woltemade; Demirovic

Unavailable: Zagadou (Injured), Toure (Injured)

Questionable: Rouault (Injured), Karazor (Injured), Diehl (Injured), Raimund (Injured), Undav (Injured)

Augsburg vs Stuttgart Prediction

As mentioned, Augsburg have persisted with their style of football and their manager ahead of this one but they have been generally underwhelming to watch. The hosts haven’t been able to get a rhythm. They now face a Stuttgart side that play an impressive counter-attacking style of football under Hoeness. It appears an even contest on paper but a good value bet should be to side with the visitors for this one.
