Atletico Madrid Preview: Rampant Los Rojiblancos
After an initially poor start to the campaign following a summer of heavy investment, Atletico Madrid have stumbled upon a formula that has made them fairly rampant in recent months with Los Rojiblancos two points off the top with a game-in-hand ahead of this weekend.
They come into this one on the back of a hard-fought 1-0 defeat of Marbella in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey last weekend. Atletico have now enjoyed 13 successive victories across all competitions in a run that stretches back to late-October.
Osasuna Preview: Regression to the mean
Under the management of Vicente Moreno, who replaced Real Mallorca-bound Jago Arrasate over the summer, Osasuna have impressed and overperformed this season as they begin the match day sitting tucked inside the top-half in La Liga.
The Pamplona-based club have, though, drifted as the season has gone on. The visitors come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Athletic Club a few weeks ago, extending their winless run of form in La Liga to six matches.
Atletico Madrid Team News: Not many issues
Atletico’s recent success had been brought about by heavy rotation but they have slowly settled into a best eleven. Key defender Jose Maria Gimenez remains an injury doubt, though, for this weekend’s visit of Osasuna.
Predicted XI (4-4-2): Oblak; Marcos Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Javi Galan; Giuliano Simeone, De Paul, Pablo Barrios, Samuel Lino; Griezmann, Julian Alvarez
Unavailable:
Questionable: Jose Maria Gimenez (Injured)
Osasuna Team News: Attacking doubts
Osasuna have been brilliant in attack this season but their performances dipped with injuries mounting. They have no definite absentees to kick off 2025, though, albeit both Bryan Zaragoza and Kike Barja remain injury issues.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Sergio Herrera; Jesus Areso, Boyomo, Juan Herrando, Juan Cruz; Jon Moncayola, Lucas Torro, Aimar Oroz; Ruben Garcia, Budimir, Bryan Zaragoza
Unavailable:
Questionable: Bryan Zaragoza (Injured), Kike Barja (Injured)
Atletico Madrid vs Osasuna Prediction
Atletico Madrid have been relentless and it could be a fair argument to suggest that Atleti didn’t want or need the winter break as it halted their excellent form. Osasuna, on the other hand, were stumbling into the pause and will be grateful to have had a mini break ahead of the resumption. Atletico can go top of the table this weekend with a win as Barcelona and Real Madrid face each other in a Clasico Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia but there is just something a bit Atletico about them blowing that opportunity and with Osasuna having time to recalibrate, both teams scoring seems a good bet for this one in the capital.
