Ashlyn Krueger’s Indian Wells participation was looking like it was going to come to a premature end when she was bagelled in the first set by compatriot Katie Volynets on Thursday, but she turned the match around brilliantly after that, dropping just four games in the next two sets to book a meeting with 23rd seed Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina made a promising start to 2025 by reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the third time in her career, but her level has dropped since then having won just two of her five matches in the three tournaments she has entered since the Melbourne Grand Slam.

The Ukrainian, who has reached the quarter-finals or better in all four Grand Slams at least twice in each major, has often saved her best tennis for the big events, though. An Indian Wells semi-finalist in 2019, the 30-year-old knows what it takes to perform here, but given the giant strides Krueger has made in recent months, do not be surprised to see this one go the distance.
