The world number one, a finalist in Indian Wells two years ago, is steadily rebuilding her confidence after a couple of early exits since her Australian Open final defeat to Madison Keys.

Undoubtedly one of the stories of the Indian Wells Open so far, Sonay Kartal continued her dream run with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Polina Kudermetova. The Brit has now recorded three straight-sets victories since she was handed a lucky loser berth in the first round.

This is undoubtedly the biggest match of Kartal’s career against Sabalenka, and she will feel that she has nothing to lose against the three-time Grand Slam champion. Sabalenka is the obvious favourite, but Kartal looks capable of making it competitive.
