Aryna Sabalenka vs Madison Keys Prediction
The ‘three-peat’ is on for Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated close friend Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-2 in a semi-final encounter that was mostly played under the roof on Rod Laver Arena.
With the early exchanges very much an even affair, the Belarusian increased her level and never looked back against the Spaniard, and she is now within one match of becoming the first woman since Martine Hingis in the late 90s to win the Australian Open back-to-back-to-back.
Saturday’s climax will see the world number one take on Madison Keys, who has reached the second Grand Slam final of her career, over seven years after she lost to compatriot Sloane Stephens in the 2017 US Open final.
The American upset the odds in the semi-final and produced a fantastic performance to defeat Iga Swiatek, who had previously looked near unbeatable in Melbourne. Saving a match point in the deciding set, Keys eventually triumphed 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) to win an absorbing contest.
Sabalenka has history behind her as she has won four of the five previous meetings between the pair, and all three hard-court encounters for the loss of just one set. A round of 16 clash at the China Open in October last year was the last tine they faced off, Sabalenka winning 6-4, 6-3 on that occasion.
Although Keys is riding an 11-match winning run at the moment, she has certainly done things the hard way in Melbourne with four of her five matches having gone the distance. By contrast, her opponent has dropped just one set in the whole tournament and generally been more consistent throughout.
With history within her grasp, we’re expecting Sabalenka to rise to the occasion and claim her fourth Grand Slam Singles title, and third in a row at the Australian Open.
