Top seed Aryna Sabalenka was given a stern test by McCartney Kessler in her opener, but the Belarusian used her serve to dictate the key moments and progressed with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph over the American.

That test will serve her in good stead as she seeks to rebuild some confidence following a couple of early exits in Qatar and Dubai recently.

Lucia Bronzetti, who reached her fourth career final in Singles at the Transylvania Open just last month, has overcome both Anhelina Kalinina and 30th seed Magdalena Frech to reach the third round at Indian Wells for the second year in succession.

Sabalenka has had some wobbles lately but she showed some positive signs against Kessler and we’re tipping her to step up a gear here and win in straight sets against the Italian.
