Aryna Sabalenka was not at her best during her second-round match against Anna Blinkova but still made it through to the next stage with a 6-3 6-4 win. Sabalenka was pegged back in the first set and committed a few too many unforced errors in the second. There are aspects of the world number one’s game that need to be ironed out if she is to win her third Madrid Open title.
She takes on Elise Mertens in the third-round. Mertens produced a really fine performance to beat the in-form Camila Osorio 6-3 6-3. She held off an Osorio comeback from 5-1 up in the second set to seal the match on her seventh match point.
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 9-2 and 2-1 on clay. They played just a week ago at the Stuttgart Open, with the Belarussian defeating Mertens 6-4 6-1 in the quarter-final.
We can’t see anything other than history repeating itself here and Sabalenka making it through to the fourth-round with another straight sets win.
