Arthur Fils vs Jakub Mensik Prediction
Arthur Fils was stunned on Wednesday as Joao Fonseca beat him 3-4 4-2 4-1 1-4 4-1 and that will likely only serve as a motivation for this match. Fils will be keen to produce as the top seed but he was just a little below-par in all areas of his game on Wednesday.
As is so often the case, so much depends on what version of Fils turns up physically and mentally, and while there were some positive signs, he simply has to improve in both areas if he is to win here.
He meets Jakub Mensik who was involved in the best match of the opening day as he went down 3-4 3-4 4-2 4-2 3-4 in a five-set thriller that had three tiebreaks against Learner Tien. The American just edged the key moments but there really was little separating the two players.
Mensik blasted 24 aces, won 84% on first serve, generated nine break points compared to Tien’s three while he won 41 receiving points compared to Tien’s 24. It was Tien who did it when it mattered in the tiebreaks however.
There is little margin for error for either of these players which makes this match so enticing. Fils is going to have to improve significantly but this is the type of challenge he will rise to. That said, all the data along with the eye test points to Mensik from Wednesday’s matches, it is purely whether Fils can step up a level which he so often does.
We would guard against picking a winner but look towards set betting. This one could easily go the distance once again.
