THE LOWDOWN
Unfortunately, we will not get to see the rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder after their epic battle ended in a draw. At least not yet anyway. Fury has signed an £80m deal with ESPN, splitting their paths in different directions for now as they have alternative bouts slated with Wilder taking on Dominic Breazeale in May (click link for preview: https://www.thestatszone.com/deontay-wilder-vs-dominic-breazeale-preview-prediction) and Fury facing the unbeaten German – Tom Schwarz.
These are not the fights the fans want to see but at least the top heavyweights are remaining active and Fury’s team and promoters eye up this bout to gain some attention in America as they head to Nevada, but what can they gain by taking on a relatively unknown fighter?
Schwarz is not on many people’s radar but at least he is an experienced, unbeaten and ranked heavyweight. He is young, hungry and knows this is the biggest opportunity of his career and will do everything in his power to cause an upset.
Schwarz has been granted this shot by racking up 24 wins without tasting defeat and has knocked out seven of his last ten opponents, which does not include his controversial fight with Senad Gashi last year. Gashi made Schwarz uncomfortable, fighting dirty and after a couple of headbutts, the referee called an end to the fight in the sixth round. Theatrics spilled out afterwards as Gashi was keen to resume fighting but luckily a brawl did not quite erupt. This circus is the most memorable part of the German’s record but he is hoping to make a name for himself by taking the scalp of one of the biggest names in the sport.
Schwarz is heading towards the top of the heavyweight pile but he is not quite there yet. He has a similar record to Fury but ‘The Gypsy King’ has been fighting at championship level for most his career and despite his well-documented hiatus, he returned to the big stage after a couple of tune-up fights and was extremely close to dethroning the WBC champion - Wilder. Let’s take a closer look at their last 15 opponents and compare:
They both have very impressive records as they have fought fighters with extremely healthy records who had previously won the majority of their fights. Fury’s opponents have the better win percentage on average but the main difference is the experience of their opponents. Fury has shared the ring with more accomplished fighters, with 176 more wins collectively than Schwarz’s. Schwarz is relatively unknown, but his opponents are even more of a mystery for the fans as there are no big names on that record.
THE PREDICTION
This fight makes little sense for Fury considering the Wilder rematch was in the palm of his hands. Beating Schwarz does nothing for his stock and a shock loss could easily scupper any rematch with Wilder or a fight with Anthony Joshua down the line. Fury is a different level to Schwarz but at heavyweight anything can happen.
The German has nothing to lose which always makes for a dangerous opponent. He is big, powerful and has a good chin but then again, these attributes are usually essential in this weight class. Schwarz comes into his own when the fight starts to lose shape. He is extremely dangerous when he closes the distance and forces a brawl.
However, Fury simply will not let that happen. His defence is arguably the best in the world at heavyweight so Schwarz’s chances of landing any fight-ending shots is unlikely and it will require a massive mistake from Fury.
So, how long is this expected to last?
Schwarz makes shorter work of his opponents but it is important to note that his decision wins were not 12-round fights. We know Fury does not possess that devastating one-punch knockout power but he has still put away top heavyweights. He overwhelms them with a relentless output and awkward movement that keeps him elusive and this is exactly what we expect him to do against Schwarz.
Fury is expected to toy with the German. He will duck and weave past his aggressive shots while jabbing him at will, waiting patiently to throw a power straight right. Don’t be surprised to see Fury talk through the rounds, winding Schwarz up which could easily effect him based on past fights. Either way, Fury is likely to wear Schwarz down and secure a late finish, but will this be enough to impress the American fans on his ESPN debut?
