We've analysed each of the eight seeds at this year's BetVictor World Cup Of Darts and assessed their chances of success at the team event. Here we look at #1 seed England:

  • England are four-time winners of the PDC World Cup of Darts having won the event in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. The pairing of Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis represented England on all four of those occasions, and they also lost in the final in 2015. England have not reached a World Cup final with any other pairing.
  • This year they are represented by the 2018 World Championship winner Rob Cross and the 2019 World Championship runner-up Michael Smith. With Cross currently number two in the rankings and Smith ranked number six, they are the number one seeds at the tournament.
  • Michael Smith is making his World Cup debut, whilst Cross is appearing at the World Cup for the second successive year, having made his debut in 2018 when he partnered Dave Chisnall as England exited the tournament in the quarter-finals at the hands of Belgium.

THE VERDICT

England enter the tournament as number one seeds with a strong pairing of Rob Cross and Michael Smith, the duo have plenty of big game knowhow and quality, however, they do lack experience of this unique World Cup format. Doubles matches are likely to be where they are tested the most, and they will have to settle into the format straight away as they face a tough opening match against the Philippines who are represented by the very competent pairing of Lourence Ilagan & Noel Malicdem – who have both won tournaments on the PDC Asian Tour in 2019. If England get through their tricky opening fixture, they can go on to reach the final – though they may fall just short in their bid to win the World Cup for a fifth time.
