PREDICTION
A meeting between Manchester United and Arsenal might not be the classic affair it was a decade or so ago but there will certainly be an interesting sub-plot going into this one, with this being the last ever meeting between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger as managers of these clubs.
With the latter’s decision to step down from Arsenal at the end of the season, it will signal the end of an era between these two adversaries and both men will love nothing more to get the better of their opposite number.
Manchester United will be buoyed by the fact that the disposed of Tottenham last weekend and now move into the FA Cup final, while Arsenal come here off the back of Europa League exploits against Atletico Madrid.
With that in mind, it might mean that Arsenal’s full focus is not on this fixture, what with the return against Atletico Madrid around the corner. At the same time, Wenger will not want to visit Old Trafford without trying to earn a win.
A win for United would make sure of a return to the Champions League next season, and that may well be enough motivation. The signs point to a home win on Sunday.
MEMORABLE MEETING
24th October 2004 was the day in which Arsenal were no longer invincible. They came to Old Trafford looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 50 matches, but unfortunately for them Sir Alex Ferguson masterminded a result which stopped them getting to their coveted half-century.
In what was certainly a feisty affair, it looked as if Arsenal were to come away with a draw with the deadlock not yet broken by either side, but Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s penalty 17 minutes from time put their run in serious jeopardy. A run that was finally ended when Wayne Rooney scored in the dying seconds to make the final score 2-0 to United.
