THE TEAM NEWS

MUMBAI INDIANS

Coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • Mumbai Indians have won their last two matches against Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad as their strong bowling attack defended totals in both matches in impressive fashion so confidence is high right now.

  • Alzarri Joseph was handed a start against the Sunrisers with Lasith Malinga rested, and the talented West Indian responded in stunning style taking an all-time IPL best of 6 wickets for just 12 runs as they bowled the Sunrisers out for just 96 and he will surely keep his place after that stunning effort.

  • Their middle order is providing them with great depth to their batting with Krunal and Hardik Pandya, along with Kieron Pollard finding some excellent form, and the team is functioning extremely well so changes are unlikely unless they rotate Malinga back in, potentially for Behrendorff.

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Coach: Mike Hesson

Captain: Ravi Ashwin

  • Kings XI Punjab scraped past Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday by six wickets with the penultimate ball of the match to take them to four wins from six matches so far, and this will be their third match in the last five days.

  • Their only two losses in the tournament so far have come on their travels in Chennai and Kolkata so along with potential fatigue, they will have to raise their game in Mumbai here against a team that is in similarly strong form like themselves.

  • They continue to rotate their bowling attack with Mujeeb Ur Rahman playing the last game but there is every chance that Andrew Tye or Hardus Viljoen could rotate back into the line-up which should be otherwise unchanged here unless veteran Chris Gayle is rested.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these teams come into this match in solid form and this should be an entertaining game. Mumbai Indians have overcome two of the best teams in the competition in their last two matches and that will give them plenty of confidence. They will have benefitted from rest which has not been the case for Kings XI as they have played on Saturday, Monday and now this. Veterans like Chris Gayle may struggle to play with such a quick turnaround in matches, although it is helping the likes of Mayank and KL Rahul find some form. The Indians are the more complete team however and are looking formidable already. They should have enough with the bat, and more than enough quality with the ball to shade this one.
