THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
Coach: Trevor Bayliss
Captain: Eoin Morgan
- The pressure is growing on England having lost their last two games and they come into this game against India desperate for victory or their hopes of a top four place will be seriously jeopardised.
- The batting has begun to look extremely vulnerable in the games against Sri Lanka and Australia with confidence notably dented and the absence of Jason Roy has been a major factor in that so they will be desperately hoping he can recover and play this game.
- All the talk in the camp is on getting back to basics here but much will depend on whether Roy can return, otherwise they may consider a reshuffle to move Joe Root up the order to open the innings along with Bairstow and drop James Vince to number three.
INDIA
Coach: Ravi Shastri
Captain: Virat Kohli
- India continue to coast through the group stage as they come off a resounding 125-run over West Indies at Old Trafford on Thursday and they will be motivated to keep this form going and put a serious dent in England’s chances at Edgbaston.
- Virat Kohli’s men have shown that whether they bat or bowl first, they are equally comfortable setting or chasing a target but they will relish the conditions at Edgbaston against this under-pressure England team.
- Mohammed Shami kept his place on Thursday against the West Indies despite Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to fitness and he repaid the faith shown in him with a second consecutive four-wicket haul so he will almost certainly keep his place once again in what should be an unchanged side.
THE PREDICTION
This is a crunch game for England who are under increasing pressure from the likes of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and even Bangladesh in the race for fourth place. That does not bode well when their batting looks fragile already and they face an Indian team who can play with freedom and have coasted through the group stage so far. There is every chance that India will have the greater support than the hosts in Birmingham, and Virat Kohli’s men will strongly fancy their chances of putting a major dent in England’s chances here with conditions suiting them.
