THE TEAM NEWS

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Justin Langer

Captain: Aaron Finch

  • Australia come into this crunch match with India having won their opening two matches in the Cricket World Cup and having beaten India 3-2 in a five-match ODI series in March where they beat their opponents on their home turf and came back from 0-2 down in the series.

  • The win over West Indies was an excellent result for them as they were tested much harder than they were against Afghanistan in their opening match, and after some heroics with the bat from Nathan Coulter-Nile who smashed 92 from 60 balls, their bowling attack thwarted the Windies’ big-hitting batsmen.

  • They are unlikely to make any changes from the side that started both the opening two match with the team extremely well settled but they will be hoping for a greater contribution from their two all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis who have not been at their best so far.

INDIA

Coach: Ravi Shastri

Captain: Virat Kohli

  • India eased to victory in their opening match against South Africa by six wickets at Southampton, but they will know they face another step up in quality here as they face the defending champions at The Oval.

  • The major positive from that match was the form of their bowlers who restricted South Africa to just 227/9 and it was spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal who made major in-roads into their batting with Chahal’s four-wicket haul proving key.

  • There is every chance that they too will name an unchanged side for this match unless they decide to bring Shankar in for KL Rahul as an additional all-rounder, but that seems unlikely after such a good opening display by that eleven.

THE PREDICTION

Two of the favourites to lift the 2019 World Cup clash early in the tournament at The Oval on Sunday as both teams will look to stamp their authority here. Australia have an excellent record against India having won 8 of their previous 11 matches in the World Cup, and they have made a habit of beating them when it counts. The Aussies have had the advantage of playing a couple of matches already so they may have an edge on sharpness compared to the Indian line-up. Virat Kohli’s men struggled in the two recent series against Australia and that was without Smith and Warner, and Australia just seem to have the edge over them at the moment.
