THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Serena Williams 6-0 Carla Suarez Navarro
Last meeting: Serena Williams beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-3
SERENA WILLIAMS
- Serena Williams looked comfortable on court for the first time at this year’s Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory over Julia Gorges, whom she beat in the semi-finals last year.
- Williams won her first mixed doubles match with Andy Murray in straight sets to much celebration and she will have benefitted from Sunday’s rest.
- Seven-time Wimbledon champion Williams has a healthy 6-0 head-to-head record with her next opponent Carla Suarez Navarro.
CARLA SUAREZ NAVARRO
- Carla Suarez Navarro spoiled the party for Angelique Kerber’s conqueror Lauren Davis by winning their third-round match in straight sets.
- The Spaniard is through to the round of 16 stage for the third time at Wimbledon which remains to be the only Grand Slam she has not played a quarter-final at.
- 30-year-old and 30th seed Navarro had a decent clay-court season which as a Spaniard tends to be her favoured surface but she is full of running on any surface and hard to stretch off court.
THE PREDICTION
Serena Williams gets better with every game played this year at Wimbledon and looked in good condition in both her singles and doubles matches played on Saturday. At this rate, she will be at her peak abilities by the quarter-finals. That does not bode well for Carla Suarez Navarro, who has never won in the round of 16 at Wimbledon nor beaten Williams in six attempts. Last year’s semi-finalist Julia Gorges was beaten in two, and Suarez Navarro should go the same way.
