THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Rafael Nadal 4-1 Sam Querrey
Last meeting: Sam Querrey beat Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-6
SAM QUERREY
- Sam Querrey put in an assured performance to beat fellow American Tennys Sandgren in four sets in their round of 16 match, grinding out the last two sets in tiebreaks.
- Querrey has reached the quarter-finals for the third time in four years at Wimbledon in a far more straightforward draw than his previous pathways but he now faces his first elite test in Rafael Nadal.
- The American was the victor when these players last met where Sam Querrey won the Mexico Open in a straight-sets match but Rafael Nadal leads their head-to-head record 4-1.
RAFAEL NADAL
- It was never in any doubt throughout Rafael Nadal’s round of 16 straight-sets victory over Joao Sousa and he now faces Sam Querrey for a sixth time in his career.
- Nadal’s round of 16 win was his second successive match in which he did not face a break point, with two commanding displays over Sousa and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before that.
- The world number two is through to his second successive quarter-final at Wimbledon after five difficult years to face Querrey whose grass-court game should be feared by any player.
THE PREDICTION
This match between a fierce and focused Rafael Nadal and a resolute Sam Querrey could go down as another enthralling five-set showdown. The American must be respected at this level on grass, where he has previously defeated Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, and he is very difficult to break on serve. While the majority of support will be for the Spaniard, and he will be favourite on Wednesday, Sam Querrey is routinely underestimated and could cause another shock. Nadal should win, but this match going the distance seems the likeliest call.
