THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings:
Novak Djokovic 5-1 David Goffin
Last meeting:
David Goffin beat Novak Djokovic 6-2, 3-6, 7-5

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Novak Djokovic had a far easier time of it against his second youngster of the tournament Ugo Humbert in the round of 16, winning in straight sets.
  • The world number one will play Belgium’s David Goffin in the quarter-finals with whom he has a 5-1 head-to-head record spanning from 2013 to 2017.
  • Djokovic has lost just two of the 11 quarter-finals he has been a part of at Wimbledon with this to be his 12th appearance at this stage of the competition in 15 years.

DAVID GOFFIN

  • David Goffin has had to work immensely hard to reach his first quarter-final at Wimbledon but has done so with a four-set victory over Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.
  • The Belgian number one has spent a significantly larger amount of time on court than his next opponent Novak Djokovic, nearly two hours, but his fitness is one of his main strengths.
  • The 28-year-old is on the wrong end of a 5-1 head-to-head record with Djokovic but interestingly did beat the Serb at this stage of the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2017 in their last meeting.

THE PREDICTION

This should be the most attractive match of the day on Wednesday. David Goffin has fought hard to reach the first quarter-finals at Wimbledon of his career and the former world number seven is an excellent player to watch, but his mentality can be questioned against the elite. There is nothing in the rule book that says he can’t take Novak Djokovic all the way to five sets, even win, apart from Novak Djokovic’s innate ability to defend his way to victory. Goffin will win support against the Serb with his silky play-style, but saving a miracle he will be on the wrong end of a four or five set tennis showcase. Novak Djokovic will appreciate the challenge.
