MATTEO BERRETTINI
- 23-year-old Matteo Berrettini came from a set down twice in his third-round match with talented Argentine Diego Schwartzman to win in a five-set epic.
- The Italian faced 15 break points against Argentina’s Schwartzman but saved 13 of them and he will need every bit of his determination against next opponent Roger Federer.
- Berrettini is through to the round of 16 I just his second Wimbledon appearance and sets his own Grand Slam record, with a third-round exit at last year’s Roland-Garros beaten.
ROGER FEDERER
- Roger Federer put in a masterful performance in his third-round match with Lucas Pouille to win in straight-sets for the second successive game.
- Two more wins here will likely see Federer face Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, with the Swiss keen to avenge his loss to the Spaniard at Roland-Garros last month.
- The Swiss number one and seven-time Wimbledon champion has never faced Matteo Berrettini before but will know all about the Stuttgart winner, and beat the Italian’s Halle conqueror David Goffin in the final last month.
THE PREDICTION
Matteo Berrettini will cause Roger Federer all sorts of problems in their round of 16 match where they meet for the first time. The Italian is full of running and will benefit from a day’s rest on Sunday following his marathon match with Diego Schwartzman and should be difficult to stretch off the court, but there is perhaps no better player in history to do so. The Swiss world number three showed the best of his game against Lucas Pouille and finally looks to be in his groove. He could drop a set if Berrettini can emulate his last performance but can win in four.
