THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Elina Svitolina 4-2 Simona Halep
Last meeting: Simona Halep beat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
ELINA SVITOLINA
- Elina Svitolina almost lost the first set of her quarter-final match with Karolina Muchova but rallied to win in straight sets to face Simona Halep in the semi-finals.
- The Ukrainian is through to her first ever semi-final at a Grand Slam on what is probably her least-favoured surface, as suggested by her poor grass-court tournaments coming into Wimbledon.
- Svitolina will face former world number one Halep for a seventh time in her career with a healthy 4-2 lead in career meetings.
SIMONA HALEP
- Simona Halep fought back from a break down in the first set against Zhang Shuai to force a tie-break and then win five games in a row for a straight-sets quarter-final victory.
- The Romanian former world number will face eighth-seed Elina Svitolina whom she beat in three sets in their previous meeting.
- After an indifferent grass-court season building up Wimbledon Halep has found her rhythm at the right time to reach only her second ever semi-final at this Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
The semi-finals of Wimbledon is a fantastic setting for Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep to play their first meeting on grass, which is probably neither player’s favoured surface. Simona Halep is on the wrong end of a 4-2 head-to-head record but did beat Svitolina in Doha on clay earlier this year and has the far better Grand Slam form. Halep and Svitolina have won one semi-final each within their head-to-head record, to further muddy the waters, but Simona Halep won their only previous meeting at a Grand Slam with a quarter-final win at Roland-Garros in 2017. The Romanian will fight until the end and should prevail.
