THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings: Daniil Medvedev 1-0 David Goffin
Last meeting: Daniil Medvedev beat David Goffin 6-2, 7-6, 6-3
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
- Daniil Medvedev conceded the first set to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in a close tiebreak but came back to win in four sets.
- The Russian is seeded 11th at Wimbledon and has emulated his best record here after also reaching the third-round last year.
- 23-year-old Medvedev had an excellent clay-court season earlier this year and also won the hard-court Sofia Open which is probably his best surface.
DAVID GOFFIN
- David Goffin is yet to drop a set after two straightforward wins over Bradley Klahn in the first round and Jeremy Chardy in the second.
- Goffin has already lost to his next foe Daniil Medvedev at a Grand Slam this year at the Australian Open back in January
- The 28-year-old has reached the round of 16 stage at Wimbledon twice before, losing to a peak-form Stan Wawrinka in 2015 and eventual runner-up Milos Raonic a year later.
THE PREDICTION
Daniil Medvedev beat David Goffin at the Australian Open in three sets earlier this year but Goffin’s game is more suited to grass and his journey to the Halle final last month suggests he is the close favourite here. Medvedev has not progressed past this stage at Wimbledon before now, but Goffin has the experience and form to make it through here.
