THE LOWDOWN

Last meeting: Elise Mertens beat Barbora Strycova 6-3, 7-6
BARBORA STRYCOVA
- Barbora Strycova beat an out of sorts Kiki Bertens in straight sets in the third round to face her third seed of the campaign Elise Mertens.
- Strycova came off the worse in her only previous meeting with Belgium’s Elise Mertens, losing in straight sets at last year’s US Open.
- The 33-year-old Czech reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon back in 2014, the only Grand Slam she has managed to do so.
ELISE MERTENS
- Belgium’s Elise Mertens lost her first set at this year’s Wimbledon but won her third round match with Wang Qiang to face Barbora Strycova in a Grand Slam match for the second time in her career.
- Mertens lost to Karolina Pliskova at Eastbourne last month but reached the quarter-finals on grass in Mallorca the week before.
- The winner of this match has a difficult quarter-final on their hands where they could face either Johanna Konta or Petra Kvitova.
THE PREDICTION
33-year-old Barbora Strycova is into the round of 16 for a second time at Wimbledon after reaching the quarter-finals back in 2014 and is yet to drop a set in her campaign. She faces Elise Mertens for a second time at a Grand Slam after losing to the Belgian at the US Open last year but there is little to suggest that result is certain here. Both players have put in some assured performances and while Mertens is the better player on paper, Strycova is in excellent form. This match will likely need a deciding set.
