THE TEAM NEWS
THAILAND
- Thailand have lost their opening two matches of the tournament having conceded a total of 18 goals whilst scoring once so expectations are relatively low coming into this game although they will want to salvage some pride.
- They were defeated 5-1 by Sweden in their second match, though it was more competitive performance from the 13-0 defeat to the USA and Kanjana Sung-Ngoen's late goal finally gave them something to celebrate.
- Thailand have now conceded 18 goals at this Women's World Cup, which equals the overall record for a single tournament set by Argentina in 2007 and they will hope to put in a much-improved defensive display here even if they do rotate as expected.
CHILE
- Chile have lost both of their matches in the tournament, with their opening match defeat against Sweden followed by a 3-0 loss against USA in a game in which they could have lost more heavily but for some inspired goalkeeping.
- Goalkeeper Christiane Endler was outstanding against USA proving she is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and if it had not been for her, the scoreline would have been a lot worse for Chile.
- At the time of writing they are not eliminated and need to concentrate on getting three points against Thailand and also try to close the gap on goal difference if they want to qualify for the round of 16 – even then their fate is out of their own hands. Even if they are eliminated, they will see this as a match they can and should win.
THE PREDICTION
It has been a tough tournament for both teams with USA and Sweden proving far too strong. Chile have managed to stay competitive to an extent and will fancy their chances of rounding off the group stage with a win. Expect Thailand to show plenty of spirit but they may struggle to break down the Chilean defence and find a way past the excellent shot-stopper Christiane Endler. The South American’s will have enough quality to ensure they claim the spoils in this fixture.
