THE TEAM NEWS
SOUTH AFRICA
- South Africa will need a minor miracle to progress to the knockout stages of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup after they lost their second consecutive game at the start of the tournament.
- They must now beat Germany and hope other results go their way to qualify as one of the four teams that will progress from third position but that looks a tall order with their run without a win now stretching to 12 matches.
- South Africa have been far from embarrassed in their debut appearance at the World Cup but they only have one game remaining to try and earn their first positive result and may look to rotate their side again after making four changes to their starting XI last time out.
GERMANY
- Germany qualified for the last 16 as they secured their second 1-0 victory of the tournament, this time against Spain and now the team ranked second in the world will be looking for the point they need to top Group B.
- The Germans were not at their best and scored against the run of play when Sara Daebritz broke the deadlock just before half-time but they defended well to prevent the Spaniards from levelling.
- Dzsenifer Marozsan could be out for the rest of the tournament after it emerged she suffered a broken toe against China in their opening match and that would be a huge blow for Germany to lose their influential midfielder.
THE PREDICTION
Germany made it two wins from two but looked far from convincing in their narrow victory over Spain and know they will have to improve if they are to have a serious tilt at winning the Women’s World Cup. They have progressed to the last 16 but will want to top the group and the game against South Africa represents a good chance for them to try and build some momentum ahead of the knockout stages. The South Africans will work hard but lack the quality to pose Germany any major problems.
