THE TEAM NEWS

ECUADOR

  • Ecuador were beaten 4-0 by Uruguay in their first game of the tournament. They were already trailing 1-0 when Jose Quintero was shown a red card in the 24th minute and Uruguay pushed home their extra-man advantage from then on with three more goals resulting in a comfortable victory.
  • Finishing in the top two in a group containing Uruguay and Chile was always going to be a tall order for Ecuador and their hopes of making the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams may hinge on their final group match against Japan. Regardless of the outcome of this match, they can’t let their goal difference suffer further.
  • The dismissal of Jose Quintero will mean they are forced into at least one change from their defeat against Uruguay, with Pedro Velasco a possible replacement for him.

CHILE

  • Reigning champions Chile began their quest for a third consecutive Copa America crown with a comprehensive 4-0 win against a youthful, inexperienced Japan side. Eduardo Vargas scored twice in the second half along with goals from Erick Pulgar and Alexis Sanchez.
  • Chile came into the tournament showing some indifferent form but there were many encouraging signs in their win over Japan, with Alexis Sanchez scoring his first goal for five months, Eduardo Vargas scoring twice and a very influential performance from Erick Pulgar in midfield.
  • The win against Japan might have been expected but it was much needed and puts them in a good position to progress from the group. With their last fixture being against Uruguay, they will aim to secure their place in the knockout stages before that game.

THE PREDICTION

Defending champions Chile came through a comfortable match against Japan in their first game of the tournament and will be hoping that they can carry on the momentum against Ecuador who are needing to regroup after a heavy defeat in their opening game against Uruguay. Ecuador’s most recent successes against Chile have been on home soil at altitude, and when they have faced Chile away from home or at neutral venues, they have come up short. Chile should be in a confident mood and have enough threat in danger areas to get past the challenge of Ecuador in this match.
