THE TEAM NEWS

CURACAO

  • Curacao will enter their second CONCACAF Gold Cup searching for their first victory after they lost all three of their matches in the 2017 edition with them failing to find the back of the net in any of those games too.
  • They come into this tournament having won five of their last seven matches whilst they also won a penalty shootout in their last game that ended in a draw against Vietnam.
  • Rangelo Janga was in fine form in the CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers as he bagged six goals but he will not be taking part in this tournament which will turn the focus towards the likes of Leandro Bacuna and Gevaro Nepomuceno.

EL SALVADOR

  • El Salvador have performed well in recent Gold Cups having made it to the quarter-final stage in three of the last four competitions and will fancy their chances of at least repeating that feat.
  • They have won five of their last six matches although their five-match winning streak was ended when they lost 2-0 to Japan in their final warm-up match at the start of June.
  • El Salvador have some genuine quality in the final third and playmaker Gerson Mayen will be key whilst Nelson Bonilla will be tasked with leading the line as they attempt to reach the semi-finals for the first time.

THE PREDICTION

Curacao and El Salvador are two evenly-matched teams and will come face-to-face in their opening Gold Cup match. Both teams are capable of winning with little between them but it’s El Salvador that can be the side to edge it if the spoils are not shared. Nelson Bonilla will pose plenty of problems for the Curacao defence and if Gerson Mayen is given time on the ball, that duo could be the difference in this game.
