THE TEAM NEWS

MAURITANIA

  • Mauritania’s debut match at the African Cup of Nations finals ended in a heavy defeat as Mali brushed them aside 4-1 in their opening game of Group E.
  • They started enthusiastically against Mali but were lacking the quality to inflict damage on their opponents and after they conceded the opening goal there was only one team who looked likely of winning.
  • Mauritania enjoyed a 1-0 home victory against Angola last October during the qualifying campaign for this tournament with Adama Ba scoring the only goal of the game.

ANGOLA

  • Angola came from behind to earn a creditable 1-1 draw against Tunisia in their opening fixture at the 2019 African Cup of Nations and now face a fixture against tournament debutantes Mauritania.
  • Angola were well deserving of their point against Tunisia having responded well to falling behind during the first half and they improved in the second where they were rewarded with an equaliser from Djalma.
  • Both Gelson and Geraldo were introduced at half time to good effect against Tunisia and it is likely that they have done enough to earn a place in the starting XI for this match.

THE PREDICTION

Angola picked up a valuable point against Tunisia in their previous match and will be looking to follow it up with a victory against tournament debutantes Mauritania, who were outclassed against Mali in their opening fixture. These teams have met in competitive action fairly recently as they were in the same group during the qualifying campaign, both coming away with a home win each from those two fixtures, with a 4-1 victory for Angola followed by a 1-0 win for Mauritania. That previous success for Mauritania will give them some belief going into this match but most of their good results have been on home soil. Angola have more experience in their squad and the way they recovered from going behind against Tunisia bodes well for them. They are predicted to take the three points from this encounter.
