Angers Preview: Need a result

Following their promotion to the top-flight of French football last season, Angers have been impressively competitive throughout the campaign but ever since a defeat in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France to Stade de Reims, their league form has collapsed.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Parc des Princes away to Paris Saint-Germain due to a second-half goal scored by Desire Doue that won PSG the league title. That means Angers have now suffered six successive defeats across all competitions.

Montpellier Preview: A grim season

Montpellier Herault begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in Ligue 1, having collected just 15 points from their 28 matches so far this season. They have also scored just 21 goals in their 28 games as they sit 12 points adrift of safety with six games to go.

The visitors’ most recent outing saw them suffer a 2-0 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Le Havre at Stade de la Mosson last weekend. That fairly embarrassing loss was their ninth successive defeat in Ligue 1, scoring just one goal in those nine games.

Angers Team News: A few injuries

Angers are dealing with a few injury issues ahead of the visit of Montpellier with Pierrick Capelle now joining the list of doubts alongside both Haris Belkelba and Emmanuel Biumla, whilst Cedric Hountondji and Sidiki Cherif remain confirmed absentees.

Predicted XI (5-3-2): Fofana; Raolisoa, Bamba, Lefort, Hanin, Ekomie; Belkhdim, Abdelli, Aholou; Lepaul, El Melali

Unavailable: Hountondji (Injured), Cherif (Injured)

Questionable: Belkelba (Injured), Capelle (Injured), Biumla (Injured)

Montpellier Team News: Meite suspended

Bamo Meite was sent off in that aforementioned loss to Le Havre so he is now missing through suspension for this one. He is sidelined alongside several other fellow defenders such as Enzo Tchato, Nikola Maksimovic, Christopher Jullien and Becir Omeragic.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lecomte; Sacko, Kouyate, Sagnan, Sylla; Ferri, Chotard; Coulibaly, Pays, Savanier; Delort

Unavailable: Meite (Suspended), Tchato (Injured), Maksimovic (Injured), Jullien (Injured), Omeragic (Injured), Issoufou (Injured), Gueguin (Injured)

Questionable:

Angers vs Montpellier Prediction

Montpellier Herault have perhaps been circling the drain of Ligue 1 relegation for the last few seasons and they are now close to having their demotion mathematically confirmed. Angers looked to be secure in mid-table a couple of months ago but have, as mentioned, collapsed. It is therefore excellent timing that they get to host the worst team in the league this weekend and a low-scoring Angers victory at Stade Raymond Kopa looks the likeliest outcome for this one.
