Anastasia Potapova vs Qinwen Zheng prediction

Anastasia Potapova battled through her first-round match with Ashlyn Krueger, recovering from the disappointment of losing a tight first set to win 6-7 (7) 6-4 6-2. She now takes on eighth seed Qinwen Zheng.

Zheng has made three consecutive quarter-finals at Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston but would have been disappointed not to have gone further in the latter event. The third seed was rarely troubled in her first two matches but then fell to a surprising straight sets defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

They have played four times, all on hard court. Zheng leads the head-to-head 3-1 and won their last encounter at the Dubai Tennis Championships very comfortably in February 2024. The Chinese player showed just how threatening she can be on clay by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer and had a 17-4 record on the surface in 2024.

We expect Zheng to get her Madrid Open off to a winning start with a straight sets win.
