Alexandre Muller wants the bragging rights and the scalp of a seed when he faces his compatriot Ugo Humbert.

The all-French affair sees the duo face-off on tour for the very first time, although Muller did triumph on clay at a lower-tier event eight years ago.

The 21st seed won the title in Marseille earlier this year but has made little impact on the dirt with just one win from three outings across Monte Carlo and Munich.

Muller was in a tight first round contest with David Goffin before the Belgian retired at 6-3 3-6 1-0 to the Frenchman and he may play more freely as the slight underdog in this one.

The world number 39 is at a career-high right now and his consistent serving over multiple tournaments makes him a threat in the Madrid conditions and he’s a good bet for a surprise win or to take it to a deciding set.
