Alexandra Eala secured a good win in the first-round, defeating Viktoriya Tomova 6-3 6-2 to make it through to the next stage. This was a nice return to form for the Filipino after her early exit as the number one seed in Oeiras.

She sets up a rematch with five-time Grand Slam winner and defending Madrid Open champion Iga Swiatek. Eala produced one of the biggest shocks of the year so far to beat the Pole in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open.

There are serious question marks over the Pole heading into this event, with no title since picking up her fourth French Open title nearly a year ago. Despite being one of the strongest clay court players of the last decade, she fell to a disappointing quarter-final loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart and will hope she can return to winning ways and win her second Madrid Open title.

Swiatek will be out for revenge against Eala and we see her getting through in straight sets.
