Ilia Topuria’s decision to vacate the featherweight title has opened the door for Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes to compete for the belt at UFC 314 in Miami on Saturday night.
Volkanovski is a former featherweight champion and he will be desperate to get that belt back around his waist. The Australian has lost his last two fights and three of the last four against Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev (twice). The last two have both been by knockout and that is certainly a concern coming into this fight.
On Saturday night, he will meet Brazil's Diego Lopes who is riding a five-fight winning streak. His last two wins have come against Dan Ige and Brian Ortega who we picked up unanimous decisions against. We love the momentum that Lopes brings into this fight and that level of activity could well work in his favour here.
Volkanovski has been a victim of his own success and hunger as the decision to step in on ten days’ notice against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev back in October 2023 may not have been the best decision for his career. He is however a company man and an absolute warrior and he will surely have benefited from taking some time away from the octagon.
Lopes is a fighter on the rise but he has not fought anywhere near the same kind of fights the Volkanovski has been involved in. Much will depend on how much the Australian has left in the tank but we think he has enough to get the victory in this one. We will be surprised if this goes five rounds given the power both men possess andwe expect Volkanovski to get the stoppage in the championship rounds and become the featherweight champion once again.
