On the back of his title defence in Auckland being ended prematurely by USA qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy, Alejandro Tabilo heads to Melbourne desperate to make amends at a Grand Slam where he has failed to progress beyond the first round since all the way back in 2020. Tabilo was beaten in three sets by Basavareddy, as the lefty struggled to cope with consistently seeing his serves returned by the American teenager.

Roberto Carballes Baena has never been afforded much joy in this tournament, but he’ll hope to take heart from the fact that Tabilo has also struggled here and is coming off the back of a poor loss where he did not play well.

This could prove to be a very open contest that has the potential to swing either way. The first set will be very important from a confidence perspective, but it would be a surprise if this game was decided in less than four sets.
