Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is enjoying a fantastic opening week in Melbourne and the 25-year-old Spaniard will be desperate to make it to the second week.
After getting a walkover in the first round after Juncheng Shang had to retire, Davidovich Fokina has been outstanding in grinding out two five-set victories over 29th-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and then Jakub Mensik last time out.
In both of those wins, he was losing 0-2 and he showed unbelievable grit, determination and stamina to fightback on both occasions.
He will have to start better against Tommy Paul here as it is hard to see him continuing to fightback in matches as he will eventually wear down.
Paul is getting better with every match he is playing right now and is looking sharper the more time he spends on court. After a five-setter against Christopher O’Connell, he beat Kei Nishikori in four and last time beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets.
He comes into this clash having beaten Davidovich Fokina in all three of their previous meetings. Those all came in 2023 with two of them coming at this tournament and the other in the US Open. Neither were comprehensive wins as Paul won in five in Australia and four in New York, but he won them nonetheless.
We expect Paul to do the same here. He should be the sharper of the two players after the huge energy expended by Davidovich Fokina and we expect Paul to win in three or four sets.
