THE TEAM NEWS

RICHMOND

  • Richmond ended last season in superb form, culminating in a Grand Final success as they clinched the Premiership, and they will come into this season on the back of a 12-match winning streak.
  • The Tigers produced one of the biggest wins in AF Grand Final history as they won by 89 points after they managed to restrict GWS Giants to just 25 points in the one-sided triumph.
  • They will look to get the defence of their title off to a strong start as they host Carlton in their opening match and they will roll with 20 of the players named in last year’s Grand Final victory with Brandon Ellis traded away while Bachar Houli is injured.

CARLTON

  • Carlton were punished for a poor start to the campaign last time out as they finished in 16th spot in the AFL and despite a better run towards the end of the season, they were way off making the finals.
  • After a terrible season in 2018 in which they won just two games, the Blues were better in 2019 but six of their seven wins in 2019 came in their last 11 games and they will need to build on that if they are to continue improving.
  • Carlton have named new recruits Jack Newnes and Jack Martin in their side for the season opener with Marc Pittonet named as an emergency but the big story for the Blues is that Sam Docherty will play in his first AFL game since 2017 due to successive ACL injuries.

THE PREDICTION

Richmond ended the 2019 season in sensational form and it culminated in a Premiership success. They won their last 12 matches in the AFL and will be keen to carry on where they left off as they host Carlton. The traditional season opener will kick off the year for the Blues and they will be eager to get off to a strong start as they attempt to make an assault on the finals. They face the toughest possible test in this game against the reigning premiers and the Tigers are likely to be too good for them with the hosts able to claim a comfortable victory.
